About the position
Smythe LLP is seeking an experienced and well-rounded Human Resources professional to join our team on a 12-month maternity leave contract. This flexible, part-time role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a growing professional services firm. As a trusted advisor to Partners and senior leaders, you will provide practical HR guidance and support across a broad range of people initiatives, including employee relations, recruitment, performance management, and HR operations. You will play a key role in fostering positive employee experience while ensuring the effective delivery of HR programs and processes across the firm. The level of the position (Manager or Senior Manager) will be determined based on the successful candidate's experience, leadership capabilities, and overall capabilities. Reporting to the HR Partner, the HR Manager / Senior Manager will oversee day-to-day HR operations and partner closely with firm leadership to support people management initiatives across the organization. This hands-on role will provide leadership in employee relations, recruitment, performance management, policy administration, and HR operations. The successful candidate will be a proactive problem-solver who enjoys balancing strategic thinking with day-to-day execution.
Responsibilities
• Serve as the primary HR contact for employees and leaders, providing guidance on policies, procedures, and employee relations matters.
• Manage employee relations issues, including investigations, performance concerns, workplace conflicts, and disciplinary matters.
• Support and oversee onboarding and offboarding processes to ensure positive employee experience.
• Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, and employee documentation.
• Ensure compliance with employment legislation, employment standards, and HR best practices.
• Partner with leaders to support performance management processes, including reviews, coaching conversations, feedback, and documentation.
• Provide guidance to managers on employee performance, attendance, conduct, and workplace issues.
• Oversee HR administration, including HRIS maintenance, reporting, and employee record management.
• Lead full-cycle recruitment activities across multiple departments, partnering closely with hiring managers to attract and hire top talent.
• Support broader People & Culture initiatives and projects as required.
Requirements
• 5–8+ years of progressive Human Resources or People & Culture experience, ideally in a manager or Senior Manager capacity.
• Strong working knowledge across multiple HR disciplines, including employee relations, recruitment, performance management, and HR operations.
• Thorough understanding of employment legislation and the Employment Standards Act, with the ability to confidently apply legislation to workplace situations.
• Demonstrated success managing full-cycle recruitment and partnering with hiring managers.
• Experience independently handling complex employee relations matters.
• Strong judgment, discretion, and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficiency with HR technology and systems, including experience with HRIS platforms such as UKG.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
