About the position
SMS Equipment is seeking a Payroll Accountant for a 12-month temporary position to support payroll accounting functions. This role involves remittances, journal entries, and account reconciliations, providing accounting expertise for both hourly and salaried employees. The position serves as a resource for payroll and finance teams, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. The role is based in Acheson, Alberta, with a hybrid work arrangement allowing up to 2 remote days per week. The schedule is Monday to Friday, with a salary range of \$60,000 - \$65,000 annually.
Responsibilities
• Maintain full working knowledge of day-to-day payroll accounting processes, ensuring accuracy and compliance across all payrolls and related accounts.
• Prepare and post journal entries, maintain payroll accounting records, and support payroll and finance requirements through accurate logs and documentation.
• Calculate and analyze payroll accruals, remittances, source deductions, pension contributions, and related payroll liabilities.
• Verify payroll data accuracy and completed journal entries, ensuring proper entry into the ERP system.
• Perform reconciliations including bank accounts, garnishments, retirement contributions, union dues, and general ledger accounts.
• Analyze complex data sets using advanced Excel tools to support payroll accounting activities.
• Complete GL reconciliations and ensure all payroll transactions are posted to the correct accounts.
• Reconcile source deduction filings against remittances to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with Payroll, Finance, and Accounting teams to resolve discrepancies and support reporting requirements.
• Act as a resource for payroll analysts and finance team members, providing guidance on accounting-related matters.
• Maintain compliance with company policies, standards, and safety requirements while fostering a professional and respectful work environment.
Requirements
• Progressive accounting experience, including payroll accounting expertise.
• Strong analytical skills to reconcile complex accounting issues and ensure data accuracy.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support internal stakeholders and collaborate effectively across teams.
• Minimum 3 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a similar payroll accounting role.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and general ledger practices.
• Experience working with integrated financial systems.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
• Ability to analyze payroll data and work effectively in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work collaboratively and support team members across functions.
