Mechanical Engineering Technologist – Product Development & Fabrication

Solaris Canada is looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineering Technologist / Mechanical Designer who enjoys designing things, building things, and figuring out how to make them better.
This is not a desk-only engineering position.
We're looking for someone who can move comfortably between CAD, 3D printing, prototyping, product development, and hands-on fabrication in our shop.
One day you might be designing a new aluminum component. The next you could be 3D printing a prototype, building a jig, cutting and assembling aluminum, troubleshooting a mechanism, or testing a new product idea.
If you like both designing and building, this could be a great fit.
What You'll Do
You'll work with our team to improve and develop Solaris aluminum louvered roof systems and the processes we use to manufacture them.
Responsibilities may include:
• Fabricating and assembling aluminum components and products
• Creating and modifying 3D CAD models
• Producing manufacturing drawings, cut lists and BOMs
• Designing components, brackets, mechanisms, jigs and fixtures
• 3D printing prototypes, tooling, jigs and production aids
• Building and testing prototypes
• Measuring and reverse-engineering existing components
• Working with aluminum extrusions and helping develop new extrusion profiles
• Designing parts for efficient manufacturing and assembly
• Troubleshooting mechanical and fabrication problems
• Working with motors, actuators, pivots, linkages, fasteners, bushings and other mechanical components
• Developing better manufacturing processes
• Reducing unnecessary parts, labour and assembly steps
• Creating repeatable shop processes and documentation
• Taking ideas from concept → CAD → prototype → testing → production
• Working with outside engineers, extrusion suppliers and manufacturers when required
Who We're Looking For
We're more interested in what you can design, build and improve than having the perfect résumé.
Ideally, you have:
• Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma or similar technical/design education
• 5+ years of practical experience in mechanical design, fabrication, manufacturing or product development
• Strong 3D CAD skills using SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360 or similar
• Hands-on fabrication experience
• Strong mechanical aptitude
• Experience creating accurate manufacturing drawings
• Good understanding of tolerances, fits, fasteners and mechanical assemblies
• Experience designing parts that actually need to be manufactured
• Strong measuring and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects

The Person We're Trying to Find
You enjoy figuring out how things work—and how they could work better.
You're comfortable designing something on a computer and then walking into the shop and building it.
You understand that a design isn't finished because it looks good in CAD. It needs to be practical to manufacture, assemble, install, service and repeat.
When you see a frustrating or repetitive process, you naturally start thinking:
"There has to be a better way to do this."
We want someone who will help us find that better way.

Pay: $65,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
