Position Overview
Our client is an established Canadian private residential mortgage lender focused on serving the alternative and near-prime (“B”) mortgage market. With a portfolio of ~$1B+, the firm provides flexible mortgage solutions to borrowers who fall outside traditional bank lending criteria, while maintaining disciplined risk management and strong portfolio performance.
Currently, the organization is seeking a strategic and commercially minded Vice President, Credit Risk to lead credit adjudication, portfolio risk oversight, and underwriting operations across their residential mortgage platform - especially as they expand into prime lending alongside their successful B program. Reporting to the executive leadership team, this individual will play a critical role in balancing growth objectives with prudent risk management while helping scale a high-performing underwriting platform.
The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in Canadian residential mortgage lending, strong knowledge of the B lending landscape, and a proven ability to lead underwriting teams in a fast-paced environment. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and entrepreneurial lender at a pivotal stage of expansion in a role that will have meaningful influence over credit strategy, portfolio quality, and operational scalability while partnering directly with senior leadership to drive long-term success.
Role Responsibilities
• Lead and oversee the underwriting and credit risk functions for the residential mortgage portfolio.
• Establish and maintain underwriting guidelines, lending policies, and credit adjudication frameworks for B mortgage products.
• Develop and execute underwriting strategies aligned with the company’s growth objectives, funding requirements, and risk appetite as it relates to their emerging prime business.
• Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing underwriting and risk team focused on accountability, responsiveness, and sound credit judgment.
• Oversee exception management and ensure appropriate governance around policy deviations.
• Evaluate and monitor portfolio quality, delinquency trends, concentration risks, and overall credit performance.
• Collaborate with technology and operations teams to improve underwriting systems, automation, and reporting capabilities.
• Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian mortgage lending regulations, investor requirements, and internal governance standards.
• Prepare portfolio and risk reporting for executive leadership, lenders, and board-level stakeholders.
• Foster a culture of disciplined decision-making, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
• Partner closely with executive leadership, sales, capital markets, and servicing teams to support scalable and profitable growth.
Desired Qualifications
• 10+ years of progressive experience in Canadian residential mortgage underwriting and credit risk management.
• Significant experience within alternative, monoline, private, or Schedule I/II mortgage lending environments with strong exposure to B lending.
• Proven leadership experience managing underwriting and risk teams in a growth-oriented lending platform.
• Strong knowledge of Canadian mortgage regulations, underwriting best practices, and market dynamics.
• Expertise/Interest in supporting the growth of a prime platform alongside the established B program and asset.
• Experience working with warehouse lenders, institutional investors, or securitization structures is considered an asset.
• Seasoned and entrepreneurial builder mindset with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-growth environment.
Please note that at present, legal eligibility to work in Canada is a prerequisite for this role.
