Job Title: Legal Counsel

Location: Toronto, Canada (Hybrid – 3 days in office)
Term: 6-month contract (starting August 2026)
Overview A highly regarded global investment management platform, operating as part of a large, diversified financial services group, is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its investment legal team on a maternity leave cover.
This role sits within a well-established private markets platform, with a strong focus on private debt and credit investments. You will work closely with investment professionals on transaction execution and ongoing portfolio matters across a sophisticated, institutional workplace.
Key Responsibilities Advise on private debt transactions, including direct lending, credit facilities, and structured investments
Support private equity and broader private markets investments
Draft, review, and negotiate transaction documentation (e.g., credit agreements, intercreditor agreements, NDAs)
Collaborate with internal stakeholders across investment, risk, and compliance functions
Retain and manage external counsel as required
Provide ongoing legal support across the private markets investment platform
Candidate Profile Qualified lawyer in good standing with a Canadian law society
Approximately 3+ years’ experience in a relevant practice area
Strong experience in private debt, leveraged finance, or private equity transactions
Background at a leading law firm and/or in-house with an asset manager, bank, or financial institution
Practical, business-oriented approach with the ability to work independently
Strong drafting, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
