About this role

Expected Salary Range: $100,943 - $126,179 annually. The salary range reflects the expected compensation for this position. The final salary offered will be determined based on a holistic assessment of a candidate’s experience, education, training, and alignment with the role’s requirements. For positions covered by a collective agreement, placement within the range will follow the applicable step or classification. The Government Relations Consultant is responsible for executing energy policy, advocacy, and issues management activities in support of the organization’s corporate objectives and supporting engagement with federal and provincial stakeholders. Working closely with senior leadership, the role provides policy analysis and strategic advice on emerging energy issues, identifies and mitigates risks in coordination with internal business units, and advances advocacy efforts on complex and sensitive policy matters. Key Responsibilities Monitors, analyzes, and reports on activity involving the Federal Government and Ontario Government, including the legislatures, cabinets, offices of key elected officials, key ministries, and government agencies relevant to the energy sector; Provides sophisticated insights on legislation, regulations, and other government publications in collaboration with in‑house policy and subject matter experts; Scans the political environment, including parties in power, opposition parties, political influencers, and stakeholders, providing timely and insightful summaries, deep dives, and other research products for use by senior management; Brings the lenses of opportunity identification and risk management to professional written materials, presentations, and verbal updates; Generates qualitative and quantitative analysis on emerging issues; Conducts research and environmental scanning of the industry and similar organizations to understand and validate best practices on emerging issues, opportunities, and risks; Creatively develops potential evidence‑based advocacy positions and initiatives on an issues‑specific and stakeholder‑specific basis; Coordinates with federal and provincial government offices to help resolve issues, flag emerging risks, and support positive customer and stakeholder outcomes; Implements risk mitigation approaches by working with internal subject matter experts and engaging with government and external stakeholders as needed; Supports Toronto Hydro’s response in sensitive or high‑risk situations affecting brand and reputation, including complex customer escalations and issues with potential corporate impact. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy or a related field; Five (5) or more years of experience in public service, public policy or government relations, including stakeholder relations; Demonstrated experience drafting written products including briefing notes and key messages, as well as presentations to senior management audiences and for use with external stakeholders; Strong understanding of legislative processes, as well as Federal and/or Ontario Government operations; Demonstrated experience working with public officials and public office holders on complex, sensitive issues; Knowledge of energy‑related policies and the utilities industry is preferred; Demonstrated experience advising and working with senior leaders on the development and implementation of issues management strategies; Proven analytical, political acuity and problem‑solving skills with strong attention to detail; Solid relationship management skills to build trusted relationships with leaders, internal and external stakeholders; Strong networking skills developed through government relations, industry associations and professional associations; Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to negotiate; Proven ability to manage competing priorities and adapt in a fast‑paced environment. Working Conditions This position is based in a hybrid environment allowing for remote work two days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite Tuesday to Thursday.
